P08 Designing and Adapting eLearning Projects to Real-world Constraints

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, October 28

Donatello 3

There are a number of great models for designing a high-quality eLearning course. Unfortunately, few of those models hold up as written when applied in the real world. You’re in the trenches, tasked with designing and developing eLearning with limited budget, hardly any time, and few, if any, resources. And yet, you are still expected to complete the project and get the job done.

In this workshop you will explore various tools and techniques for getting the most out of your design process, working smarter instead of harder, and getting the job done despite the project constraints. You will learn practical tips, tricks, pointers, and work-arounds for designing eLearning with whatever resources you have available and improving learning experiences no matter what the barriers are. You will discuss the critical roles of analysis and planning, design best practices, project management, development best practices, and more. You will work through a series of scenarios designed to simulate real-world challenges, giving you the opportunity to apply the techniques learned in this workshop into practice.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The importance of “early and often” analysis in the eLearning process
  • Opportunities for leveraging rapid-prototyping methods
  • How to use storyboarding to facilitate rapid development in your chosen authoring tool
  • How to successfully manage an eLearning project
  • How to perform basic QA and usability testing
  • How to find appropriate Creative Commons-licensed content and media

Audience:
Novice designers and developers who want to get the most out of their people, their software, and their content.

Technology discussed in this session:
Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) online media resources, project management tools.

Participant technology needs:
Laptop computer with MS Office and web access.
