Exploring the Benefits of Using WordPress for Learning

Thursday November 12, 2009 01:15 PM

B.J. Schone, Qualcomm
John Polaschek, Qualcomm Incorporated

Given the precarious financial times, organizations are seeking ways to improve communication and knowledge sharing without spending large amounts of time, effort, and money. Many content-management systems have a high barrier-to-entry because they require proprietary system knowledge and/or they have strict hardware requirements. WordPress, an open-source blogging platform, is quickly evolving into a leading solution for organizations to consider, because of its minimal cost, ease-of-use, and open architecture. WordPress allows nearly anyone to author and share information with minimal effort and minimal technical expertise.

In this session, participants will explore many aspects of WordPress, including a general overview, examples of how you can integrate WordPress into your learning ecosystem, open-source considerations (costs, security, licensing), basic technical requirements, plug-ins, RSS, and plenty of example WordPress sites. You’ll learn how WordPress enhances learning, collaboration, and communication throughout your organization. This session will help participants identify areas where WordPress may make an impact at their organization.

In this session, you will learn:
  • Some of the key features and functionality of WordPress

  • The differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

  • How to set up your own instance of WordPress

  • Ways to identify areas where WordPress may be beneficial at your organization

  • How to address upper management's questions and concerns about WordPress
Audience:
Intermediate and advanced designers and developers. Some general working knowledge of HTML, Web sites, Web applications, and Web 2.0 tools will be beneficial.
