Storyboarding a Serious Comic: A Case Study

Storyboarding is part of the design process that aids in documenting all the moving pieces between the designers and the developers. Storyboarding an instructional story, also known as a serious comic, is considerably more involved, especially when designing for desktop and mobile. One of many challenges with a project such as this is that many of the tasks cannot overlap; one project task must be completed before the next one starts. Other challenges include educating an artist to understand the differences between sequential storytelling and instructional storytelling.

Participants in this session will see a process that addresses the various phases of putting together a serious comic. In addition to the role of instructional designer, new roles emerge such as art director and scriptwriter. Storyboarding evolves into three distinct phases beginning with instructional flow, then layout, navigation, and animation, and finally matching artwork to dialogue and adding sound effects. You will see those processes, and the templates used in a serious comic project, along with asset management strategies.

  • How to map out a serious-comic project in preparation for storyboarding
  • The three phases of storyboarding a serious comic
  • How to manage over 1,000 assets of artwork

Audience:
Novice and intermediate designers, developers, and project managers. No previous experience is required.
