Mobile Mistakes—How Designs Go Wrong and How to Fix Them

Any new technology tends to first be used in ways that previous technology was used, missing the new affordances available. Also, our cognitive architecture as designers tends to leave us with a few blind spots. Similarly, our existing design processes have gaps that we’ve not yet addressed. Finally, the inherent nature of the new technologies has its own constraints that are easy to avoid. As a consequence, there are numerous ways in which our designs go awry, and it’s no different with mobile. We’re seeing a variety of predictable, and avoidable, mistakes.

Participants in this session will review the ways in which designs go wrong, and examine specific mobile instances. Possible ways to prevent these mistakes will be discussed, as well as existing and possible solutions. The lessons learned from early and existing mobile developments will also be covered. Come learn from the mistakes of the past rather than repeat them.
