The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), an association with approximately 46,000 physician members, was recently tasked with creating a mobile-tablet version of their most popular, feature-rich continuing medical education (CME) online course. Getting it right on their first mobile-tablet app endeavor was crucial. These learners demand perfection, both in and out of the operating room. Can you feel the pressure?

Participants in this case-study session will learn ASA’s process from vendor selection to successful launch. You’ll walk through a “how-to” approach for technological, logistical, and design considerations for creating a multifaceted tablet app architecture that includes Pretest, Learner, and Exam delivery options. Additional features include bookmarking, searching by taxonomy and category, storing notes, and sending feedback to ASA at the question level.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to find the right vendor partners for your mobile project
  • The criteria for technology selection, including what mobile operating system to support
  • How to manage development of web services when database schema of the system is not shared
  • How to reduce development time through storyboards
  • Project management logistics for vendor and staff roles, design, development, testing, submission to Apple, and implementation
  • How to deploy across desktop and mobile platforms
  • Pointers from a first-time effort in converting an interactive eLearning desktop course to mobile

Audience:
Novice-to-intermediate designers, developers, project managers, and managers with novice-to-intermediate project management, eLearning design, and development skills.

Technology discussed in this session:
iPad and Android-based tablet delivery.
