Watching videos and reading articles can be very effective ways to learn, yet instructional designers don’t use these methods or other effective strategies such as collaboration, teaching others, and storytelling to help learners improve their performance. Coming up with ideas to implement informal learning can be difficult when you are in an organization with an existing formal learning strategy and a disinclination to jump into anything new. As designers, we also tend to shy away from methods that don’t include the traditional instructional-design principles. We need to start tailoring our learning to how people learn and not how we, as designers, are measured or what is easiest for us to build. Sometimes it’s about hacking into our traditional learning design and trying new things.

Participants in this session will see research that supports the need for more informal learning in organizations. You’ll see cases that reinforce the need for informal-learning strategies, examples of how informal-learning strategies have addressed those issues, and get an overview of the available tools and technologies. You’ll walk away with implementable ideas to increase the use of informal learning in your organization.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How informal learning applies to an organization with an existing formal learning strategy
  • The new technology that enables the recognition of informal learning events
  • How to apply practical experiences to implement an informal learning strategy at your own organization
  • How to use traditional instructional design principles in informal learning

No knowledge needed.

Technology discussed in this session:
