Triggers, Hovers, and Links—Oh, My! Creating Functional Prototypes

Conference Archive

DevLearn 2013 Conference & Expo - October 24, 2013

Scott Nipper

Director of Training, Americas

Conventional course storyboards, layouts, outlines, and descriptions only present a linear representation of a course. Designers, developers, SMEs, stakeholders, and decision-makers don’t really get a feel for how users will see interactions, make decisions, and work through activities. Creating realistic prototypes can change this and help facilitate the development of eLearning.

During this presentation, participants will learn how to use advanced PowerPoint functionality to create working prototypes of eLearning interactivity designs. You will hear how prototypes help designers, developers, SMEs, and stakeholders get a better sense of what users will see, how the interactivity works, and what kind of learning takes place. Prototypes also make it easier to pinpoint where there are true gaps in learning and interactivity. At the end of this session, participants will be able to produce functional prototypes to more accurately demonstrate their designs.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to create a functional prototype to provide a more effective representation of your eLearning course
  • How to use triggers to make objects appear, disappear, move, and change
  • How to use action settings to show how interactivity works
  • How hyperlinking with a slide deck can be used to demonstrate interactivity

Participants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, including how to insert a blank slide, create and format shapes, and insert pictures, clip art, and text.

Technology discussed in this session:
PowerPoint 2010.

Student technology needs:
