Creating Experiences: Lessons Learned From Being a Performance Artist

Recognizing the limitations of traditional formal training, learning professionals are looking for alternatives. As people begin to talk about freeing learning from the constraints of formal instruction and creating learning experiences that engage people directly, it is often hard to get a concrete picture of what that would look like. We need to look to other areas, beyond learning, where people engage participants with new ideas in different ways.

This session will provide examples of how performance artists create experiences that engage the participants and change their mental frame of reference in much the same way that innovative learning programs do. Participants will discuss what worked and what didn’t work to gain ideas about how you can implement the creation of experiences into your programs.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The similarities between performance art and the goals of learning
  • How performance artists engage an audience around an idea
  • How performance artists push the envelope of what is expected
  • Why certain strategies like storytelling and audience participation work better than others

Novice designers, developers, and managers. No experience required.
