Lead Specialist, Instructional Design

The nature of learning in the workplace is changing. Workers are challenged by shifting from a classroom lecture-based learning mentality to a more fluid, personalized learning that takes place in the flow of work. As learning practitioners, we know about informal learning and how you can use technology to learn in the flow of work, but it can be easy to overlook how unfamiliar some of these concepts and technologies are to busy professionals, especially in a work context.

Participants in this case study session will learn how, through a pilot and a follow-up, Domino’s developed a learning experience that presents knowledge workers with a mental model for taking control of their professional development, while enabling them to reflect on the current and desired state of their personal learning networks. As part of the experience, you’ll learn how to get started with micro-blogging and social bookmarking tools, using eLearning, hands-on practice, and sharing.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to sell self-directed professional development into the organization and to learners
  • What worked and what didn’t work in finding the right blend of activities to create the learning experiences
  • Which activities most strongly resonated with a cross-functional group of knowledge workers
  • The barriers to self-directed learning and potential solutions

Novice and intermediate designers, managers, and directors.
