Spectrum Health was mired in the “traditional” way of delivering leadership development training for almost 20 years—put a class or two on the LMS and hope that leaders sign up so they can check off that box on their development plan. The company had nine training and development functions across the organization offering vastly different content. No consistent message, branding, or target audience existed. Not only were there multiple leadership philosophies across the system, but low completion rates made it difficult to tell if any learning actually made it into practice because evaluation was virtually nonexistent. A restructure within our human resources departments birthed a centralized training and development function: The Spectrum Health University (SH|U). SH|U’s mission is to eradicate boring, ineffective training and replace it with a learning journey that strategically aligns to the organization’s goals, elicits an emotional response from participants, and connects them to their peers, their leaders, and their community.

In this case-study session, participants will learn about the formation of the Spectrum Health University and its directive to rethink their approach to leadership development. You’ll learn how they created a set of structured programs that rely on “learning experiences,” an approach that incorporates a variety of components blended together.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The benefits (and challenges) of structuring your training as a “learning experience”
  • How to involve the participant’s up-line manager to foster application of content learned
  • How to seamlessly integrate a variety of tools and platforms through consistent branding
  • The importance of asking the right questions in your program evaluations

Audience:
Intermediate and advanced designers, directors, VPs, and CLOs familiar with instructional design methodology and application. A basic understanding of adult learning theory will be of benefit.

SharePoint, SumTotal, Lectora, iBook, iPad Social Learning platform, and CVent evaluation software.
