Copyright and Creative Commons—How to Find, Use, and Cite Resources
Learning Solutions Conference & Expo 2014 - March 20, 2014

New online social spaces make tracing works back to their original owner problematic, while at the same time, new licensing options make it even easier for people to share and use content legally. It is now possible to easily find art, photography, music, video, content, and even software on the web for free. The temptation to use content, images, and media from the web is increasing, especially in light of the plethora of social spaces used to share such materials. But what can you use? Under what circumstances? And how do we give credit where credit is due?
This session gives an easy-to-understand view of the issues surrounding copyright and intellectual property, and describes several options for using works while at the same time staying within legal guidelines. It will cover open attribution, Creative Commons (CC) licensing, GNU licensing, fair use, and open content. In addition, you will learn how and when you can use different CC licenses in the same material. Finally, it will cover the technical means to automate not only the crediting process for using such materials, but also adding additional resources to eLearning as desired.
In this session, you will learn:
- Which items on the web can be re-used and which require special permission
- What Creative Commons licensing is
- How to differentiate between the different CC licenses
- How to properly cite CC materials
- How to find a variety of images and media that are CC licensed
Novice designers and developers with basic web skills.
