Connecting Performance to Training via Competency-based Assessment
Ecosystem 2015 - March 26, 2015
Developing assessments that accurately measure competency can be hard work. It is much easier to ask recall-based questions, e.g., “What are the three principles of customer satisfaction?,” than to ask “How would you make this customer satisfied in this situation?” Even in cases where organizations use simulations and case studies to measure people’s ability to work through situations, it often does not connect back to training or even to the competencies the organization spent so much time to inventory.
In the session, you will discuss a way to make developing performance assessment easier. You will learn how to establish a competency framework to serve as an “interlingua” between training and real-world job performance. You will explore assessments that measure against that framework. You will examine how layering skills (such as problem-solving), knowledge (such as business or product ), and goals (such as prospecting or closing a sale) provides a means to gain deep insight into an individual’s ability to perform, in a way that maps to specific remediation.
In this session, you will learn:
- A framework for characterizing and measuring competencies
- Innovative assessments that measure against the framework
- Statistical and conceptual considerations that go into performance evaluation
- Challenges in implementing deep competency frameworks in today’s LMSs
Intermediate and advanced designers, developers, project managers, and managers.
discussed in this session:
Web-based assessment, evaluation, and eLearning.
