Stories have the power to move people. They allow the storyteller to forge a personal connection with the audience and create a situation where promoting learning and inspiration becomes infinitely easier. At their core, stories create a world where learners are interested, are engaged, and want to learn, which leads to higher retention of information and better understanding of concepts and ideas. But how do you design a good story?
This session will focus on how to create engaging stories for the purpose of podcasting, and how to use narrative podcasting techniques to teach learners information that is often viewed as technical or boring. The session will focus on how you can create audio stories that pull in learners’ attention and present information in a way that is entertaining, effective, and memorable.

- The basics of storytelling structure
- How to craft engaging narratives
- Storytelling techniques for both fiction and nonfiction podcasts
- How to use music and sound effects to drive a narrative
- Audio production tricks to strengthen the quality of a narrative podcast
- Storytelling techniques used by some of the most respected and successful modern podcasts

Jeffrey D’Anza is a design consultant with Nationwide Insurance, focusing on the creation of eLearning and media-based learning solutions (graphic design, video, and audio). Jeff has been a member of the adult learning community for almost a decade, working as both a facilitator and designer for the Nationwide Claims Training Organization. Recently, Jeff and his team won the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators (SITE) Lois A. Markovich Innovation Award for the creation of a virtual onboarding platform. Jeff holds a BA in history, an MA in organizational management, and an MBA.
Creative Consultant, Digital Learning
Joe Meyer is a creative consultant (digital learning) with Nationwide. Prior to working in the insurance industry, Joe was a designer and videographer—primarily for multimedia marketing firms—creating content for multiple Fortune 100 companies. Aside from holding a bachelor's degree in electronic media production from Kent State University, Joe earned a Certified Television Operator designation from the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Lois A. Markovich Innovation Award from the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators.
