Online educational tools are a growing resource that is highly sought after for just-in-time personal learning and for traditional and online courses. However, it is often difficult to find high-quality learning objects that you can use in any modality, are self-contained, and you can aggregate into larger collections of content. Finding game-based objects that you can use to learn or to teach new material and that are customized to meet your needs is equally challenging.

Participants in this session will explore Wisc-Online, the free online learning repository that contains both learning objects and an arcade of games. Wisc-Online—developed and managed by this session’s presenters and their team—offers thousands of learning objects that provide short, self-contained lessons covering a range of subjects, including computer science, career clusters, natural and social science, and more. GameBuilder, part of Wisc-Online, allows learning professionals and learners to create games that help reinforce foundational concepts.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to use learning objects to engage learners in many different ways
  • How to build your own game for free with GameBuilder
  • How to use existing games in the Wisc-Online arcade, written by people from across the world and shared for everyone to use and enjoy
  • How to find and download free images, videos, and animations that you can use in your own learning materials

Audience:
Novice to advanced designers, developers, project managers, managers, instructors, and other learning professionals. To gain the most benefit from GameBuilder, we encourage participants to bring typical learning questions and answers to input into the game. Note: While the learning objects and assets in Wisc-Online are geared towards academia, games built with GameBuilder can be appropriate for any audience.
