Given the adage, “Experience is the Best Teacher,” Experience Design is an alternative and complementary learning-design methodology that learning professionals can use to effectively capture and deploy experience. Beyond more traditional methodologies, Experience Design helps us avoid “mindless” decision-making biases and heuristic traps that keep us from thinking critically and using sound judgment, and helps us design learning interactions that avoid the biases and traps that interfere with how our students approach their work. By effectively targeting the underlying issues that keep students from using critical thinking in their jobs, we can create engaging, more effective, and more “mindful” learning interactions.
In this session, you’ll learn more about the Experience Design methodology, and review some of the most common “mindless” decision-making biases and heuristics that keep learning professionals doing the same things over and over while achieving the same results. Through the lens of Experience Design, you’ll look at the instructional-design process anew and see how this approach to a series of sample interactions encourages “mindfulness.”
In this session, you will learn:
- What Experience Design is and how you can use it to complement more traditional instructional-design methodologies
- What it means to be “mindless” and “mindful” in developing eLearning interactions
- About decision-making biases such as vigilant decision-making, framing, entrapment, group think, and outcome orientation
- About example learning interactions that both provide the appropriate content and facilitate students’ critical thinking and judgment
