P03 Prototyping and Creating VR and 360° Video Experiences

Virtual reality and 360-degree video require a new way of thinking in the creation of immersive experiences. Without an established vocabulary and set of practices, you need to understand both the challenges and opportunities afforded by immersive technologies. Compelling immersive environments and 360-degree videos require a creative mindset and new design strategies and tools. How do you create immersive experiences and narratives that go beyond simply replicating the existing models?
In this workshop, you will participate in a design thinking and prototyping activity in the morning and have the opportunity to create a small VR or 360 project in the afternoon. Through reviewing carefully curated case studies from existing projects, participants will deconstruct and share mapping diagrams on the creative process behind these experiences. You will discuss the challenges of creating presence in high-end VR and how to foster a sense of embodiment, agency, space, and interactivity. You will walk away from this session with a new tool set of both design insights and application skills.
In this session, you will learn:
- About developments in creating VR experiences and 360 stories
- How to prototype experiences and stories in VR and 360 following a design thinking method
- How to prototype using 2-D and 3-D tools and visual applications
- How to create a short project in a synthetic world with a platform or a 360 project with 360 cameras
Beginning and intermediate designers, developers, and managers of VR and 360-degree video. All users will benefit from the design thinking exercises and project activities.

HTC Vive VR headset, the new Microsoft mixed reality headset, Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream View headset, a variety of 360 cameras, and 360 capture and editing software.

Emory Craig is a director of eLearning at the College of New Rochelle, where he is responsible for instructional technology initiatives, professional development, and the emerging technologies. An Educause Frye Institute Fellow, he has written extensively on innovation in education and the impact of the digital revolution on contemporary culture. Emory’s research focuses on the cognitive and ethical implications of augmented and virtual reality. He is a co-founder and partner at Digital Bodies, a consulting group working with organizations on VR/AR/MR initiatives. He is currently teaching an interdisciplinary course on new media and society.

Maya Georgieva is the co-founder and chief innovation officer at Digital Bodies, a global consulting group focusing on the impact of immersive technologies on education and society. Her most recent work focuses on learning design, storytelling, immersive VR and AR experiences, and digital strategy. Maya has facilitated master classes on digital storytelling, VR/AR/MR and new media narratives, and innovation and entrepreneurship at SXSW, NMC, OLC, Educause, and college campuses. She is a member of the NMC Horizon Report Expert Panel. Maya serves as a coach for the MIT/Harvard Case Competition and a judge for Wharton’s Reimagined Education Awards.
