P03 B.Y.O.L.: Building Interactive eBooks for Mobile Learning

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, June 9

504

Many organizations are still using paper-based guides, manuals, and job aids for day-to-day operations. Planning for additional printing costs throughout the year to accommodate frequent content changes is still the norm. The reliability of this can often be questionable, as older documents may not all be thrown out when replaced with an updated version. Many other organizations have gone paperless, but the electronic versions of the documents are still basic text, which doesn’t make use of the full potential of a virtual format.

In this hands-on workshop, you will be provided with the design and development skills and practice needed to create your own interactive eBooks. You will learn how to format a document for multiple devices, the types of media that can be integrated into a document, and various free and paid tools that can be used in the process. In addition to covering various resources, you will walk through a basic workflow to convert a simple document with a few simple media types to an EPUB file format, and make that file available to attendees in Dropbox to download directly to their mobile devices.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to convert print materials to an interactive, mobile-friendly format
  • How to improve the quality of performance support materials by adding appropriate media
  • How to quickly deploy simple, effective multi-screen mobile learning solutions in your organization
  • How to create native mobile content to support users that may not have consistent access to an Internet connection

Audience:
Intermediate and advanced designers and developers with some instructional design experience. A basic understanding of HTML and CSS is helpful, but not required.

Technology discussed in this session:
Smartphones, laptops, desktops, tablets, eReaders, Sigil, Adobe InDesign, Calibre, Adobe Acrobat, video (.mp4), audio (.mp3), images (PNG or JPG), and some minimal HTML.

Student technology needs:
A laptop with Google Sigil downloaded and a mobile device (tablet, smartphone, laptop) with an eReader.
